Restaurant & Wine Bar Hanover
Our History
The Leonardo Wine Tavern has been an integral part of Hanover’s cityscape since 1880. The building on Sophienstraße has witnessed many decades, been adapted time and again, and yet has always remained true to its essence: a place for wine and meaningful encounters.
As early as 1880, a wine tavern was already operating at this location. At that time, it was housed in the predecessor building, which later gave way to the present-day Sophienhaus. The Fey wine merchant shaped the character of the building, as did the small wine tavern, which quickly became a trusted address for lovers of fine wines. Several decorative elements at the entrance still recall this early period today.

20. Jahrhundert
With the beginning of the 20th century, the surroundings began to change. The Sophienhaus was built in 1913–14 and seamlessly continued the site’s gastronomic tradition. Various operators guided the wine tavern through eventful times, yet consistently preserved it as a destination for refined hospitality. The focus remained on quality, and the atmosphere stayed personal.
In the late 20th century, the Leonardo Wine Tavern established itself as a fixture of Hanover’s restaurant scene. From 2009 onward, Donato Apicella led the establishment and shaped it into a venue that brought together tradition and contemporary cuisine. In early 2024, the management changed, yet the underlying philosophy remains the same: quality, reliability, and a clear focus on wine.
